About
Mission
The Religious Coalition for the Freedom to Marry in Maine began through informal conversations among clergy in the fall of 2006. We talked about the importance of justice in our faith traditions, and our desire to stand with those who faced oppression. We were well aware that in our society today, there are many forms of discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people, and sadly, many churches also participate in that discrimination. Thus it seemed even more essential that there be a religious voice to speak of the all-embracing love of God, and to welcome and uphold the sacredness of GLBT persons and relationships. Some of us had been involved in an earlier effort toward that purpose, the Religious Coalition Against Discrimination.
Through prayerful discernment, and in conversation with GLBT individuals and organizations, we decided that the next place where we might make a difference would be in opening up the legal institution of marriage to same-sex couples and their families who were being denied its legal protections and benefits. We began networking with other religious leaders in multiple faith traditions, started meeting monthly as an interfaith working group, and jointly created a declaration of support for the right of same-sex couples to marry. Then we invited other colleagues to add their signatures in support of the declaration. On November 13, 2008, after we had gathered 120 signatures, we brought our efforts to the public arena and formally announced our coalition. We are continuing to gather support, and invite people of faith in Maine to join us in the holy work of healing and building a community where there is justice for all.
